Technical Lanolin

INCI (CTFA) NAME:          LANOLIN

CAS NUMBER:                   8006-54-0

DESCRIPTION:  TECHNICAL LANOLIN is a yellow, tenacious, unctuous substance obtained from the wool of sheep, having a faint but characteristic odor.

CHEMISTRY:  TECHNICAL LANOLIN is classified chemically as a wax, being a complex mixture of naturally occurring esters and poly-esters of 33 high molecular weight alcohols (principally sterols) and 36 fatty acids.  It is 98% ester minimum, of which the fatty alcohols and fatty acids comprise an approximately 50/50 ratio.

APPLICATIONS:  INDUSTRIAL

METAL WORKING PREVENTATIVE COATINGS

TECHNICAL LANOLIN has been used extensively for its extreme pressure and slip characteristics in the formulation of  wire drawing compounds.  Because it is sulfur free it will not stain copper. It has also found use in slushing oil, cutting oils and lubricants. TECHNICAL LANOLIN has also had acceptance as a long term rust preventative.  Being tacky, its adherence to metal surfaces is excellent.  In addition, it has the property of forming protective surface film when exposed to air.

ADHESIVES: TECHNICAL LANOLIN is used extensively as a plasticizer and lubricating agent.  It is especially valuable
because it is nondrying, and will also impart tackiness where desirable.

TEXTILES: TECHNICAL LANOLIN and its ethoxylated derivatives have found wide incorporation into many textile lubricant formulations because these products will have a tendency to improve both the rheological and adhesional properties of the textile lubricant.  In addition, they will prevent the crystallization of the other compounds in the textile lubricant.

PRINTING INKS: TECHNICAL LANOLIN is incorporated into ink formulations to inhibit crystallization of other wax components, especially beeswax.  In addition, it will improve the rheological and adhesional properties of inks, and act as a dispersing agent for the other waxes.  It is an excellent wetting agent for natural oils in newspaper inks.

LEATHER: TECHNICAL LANOLIN is excellent when used in stuffing greases to confer prolonged pliability without
impairing strength.  It will also act as a water-proofing agent.
